Food Intake

Rules from what surrounds us…our home environment (farm? city?), culture, family, religion, economic factors, media trends…they all shape our thoughts about, and choices of foods. What is acceptable to eat in one place and time, may not be allowed at other times or in other places.

Food

Food’s physical structures (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, bio-chemicals, etc.) are the nutrient building blocks of the body. Adequate daily nutrients keep the body healthy and strong.

Eating Behaviour

In general, how do we eat? What foods do we choose? How many meals or snacks seem right for us? Does this affect the way our body stores and reacts to certain types of food?

Ingestion

A whole seperate section of the food and eating cycle is how food gets into the mouth. It involves physically the tongue, tastebuds, teeth, cheeks, lips and throat. It also involves texture and taste ( sweet, salty, sour, bitter ).

digestion.png

Digestion

Digestion is a chemical breakdown of food into smaller parts ( nutrients ) in the stomach, with the help of strong ( acid ) bio-chemicals. This creates a kind of soup that is very acidic.

Absorption

Absorption of nutrients from food happens in the gut. The small and large intestines provide a lot of surface area to get even small ( micro ) nutrients from food into the bloodstream.

Nutrient Storage

The body doesn’t always use all nutrients immediately. Some nutrients can be stored + ready sooner or later when the body demands require them. We do not conciously control what gets stored vs. what gets used right away.

Elimination

Not everything is absorbed from food. Solid and liquid wastes must exit the body as soon as they are not needed. Eating a wide variety of foods helps this process run smoothly.
